Sept 28, from King City (California) to Ramona (California)

This morning we woke up with a temperature of 12C (about 55F) with fog outside the window… and we had selected King City inland of the coast to avoid the fog!

We take it easy, upload the last photos on the blog: our indian landlord lady prepared a breakfast for us in the “Lobby-BusinessCenter-Reception-BreakfastRoom” with indian tea (milk, ginger, sugar and indian tea leaves).

We sit on the ground, waiting for the fog to lift.
Mark, our savior of last night, tells us it should lift around mid-morning, and as promised, it so happens around 10.30 am.

At the King City airport, there is a renowned aerobatics training center, their hangar is full of Extras and Pitts planes.

Off we are southbound, over large onions and garlic fields, touching the desert.
A strange view is also the many fields at the top of semi desert hills, brown spots in the middle of yellow backgrounds.

For my Swiss friends, a special picture of the BLECH airport. They will recognize.

Every now and then there is an isolated farm in the middle of nowhere, this one here probably producing the raw material for the Nappa Valley production!…

Further south we look at oil and/or gas extraction fields, as well as power generating plants. There seem also to be a lot of abandoned oil wells spread in the middle of farming land.

Irrigation canals are HUGE, and cover large distances.

An interesting comment from Europeans looking down from the airplane is that the cars are sent over the mountains on highways, and the water is sent from one valley to the other UNDER the mountain through what appears to be canal-tunnels.

A divided highway going through a mountain pass

Plenty of airports all the way, Palmdale has 2 RWYs, and there is glider activity going on close to the mountains.

In the middle of the desert, tracks on the hill point
to a play ground for adult children with their ATVs…

We approach San Bernardino, and the roads wind down the hill

Dams are being built to generate power for this ever increasing population, living in different standards of housing.

We land in Banning (California) with 33C (about 94C) for refueling and are served the VIP treatment by the local attendant.

Werner has his usual after lunch cigarillo in the warm wind of South California.

On the last short stretch to our today’s destination, we cross again farms in the hills before landing in Ramona (California), inland of San Diego, as we are again scared of fog.

Our rental car is ready, we drive off in heavy traffic to Encinitas, just outside San Diego and check-in at our hotel.

Before too long, we were on the Pacific beach, right at sunset.

Tonight dinner is by the ocean (the "chocolate delight" desert was optional, but good).

After diner, some music before we hit the sack was an obvious choice… (click on the video to enjoy a short extract of the concert we attended.

Tomorrow is a no fly day, we will visit the area by car.
