Sept 24, a no fly day in the Rapid City (South Dakota) area

We drive west to Mount Rushmore, the rock carving of the 4 Presidents of the USA.

Hilly drive through forests, some narrow spots, but since the tourist season is over, very little traffic.

A couple of single lane tunnels make it fun to drive.
Not very easy to drive the large rental car they gave us through the narrow pass and to film at the same time!

The autumn is coming, leaves are turning yellow, giving very warm colors to the drive.

We cross a couple of villages which have been restored from their old glory when gold mining was a big thing…

We drive the “Needles highway”, which has gotten its name due to a special rock formation pointing needle shaped formations into the sky.
Very impressive.

The region has many buffalos in the National Parks, and we are lucky to see a few grazing close to the road.

We keep on north bound to visit the city of Sturgis, South Dakota, where in early August, every year, tens of thousands of motorbikes, (some say more than 100.000, but where would they all find a place to park?) gather to celebrate the “Riders” freedom.
Outside of this hectic period, this small city is very quiet, and Main street seems to sleep awaiting next year’s celebration.

A casino along the road, probably an indian concession

Some riders drove by, many shops seem to have closed until … next August, and the whole atmosphere is of a certain desolation and boredom

We also visit a huge military cemetery along the road, with tens of thousands of graves

Our hotel has an indoor heated pool with attractions for the kids.
Drinking is strictly controlled, if you are born after Sept 24, 1991, you cannot get served alcohol drinks...

a new house being built, hopefully no tornado comes this way...
